Making your own volcano

August 21, 2019 by STEM and Kids 1 Comment

Have you wondered how to make your own volcano. Creating a simple volcano to erupt, sparks joy in the eyes of all kids (and adults). I have always looked with wonder at those smart kids in movies that create a really cool volcano. I was thinking it was hard to create.

I was in awe when i figured out that a homemade volcano can be quite simple.

A slow day over the weekend seemed like the perfect day to get the kids out and create their very own first volcano

While there are some recipes for a volcano that seem quite complicated this is one of the more simple ones.

How to make a volcano

You will need:

  • A tall glass or plastic container (We had an old bottle)
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Food coloring (Optional)
  • sandbox

Now we made this volcano outside in the sandbox. This is great for me as I dont like a big mess. It was also great for the kids, that they could all stand around the volcano and see the “eruption” in action.

Start by covering the glass all the way to the top with the sand. I let the kids play with this and create their own shape.

We added 4 large tablespoons of baking soda to the bottle, and prepared 3 cups with vineger and food coloring.

Adding baking soda to bottle before adding anything else

From here its all about the sparkle in the eyes of excited kids as it bubbles to the surface.

Adding vinegar to the bottle and watching it bobble out the top.

I hope you give yourself the experience of the sparkle of joy.

Let us know if you have any questions about creating your own volcano.
